Curriculum
The Curriculum at Westbourne Primary School
At Westbourne Primary school our pupils have decided that they come to school to “learn, look after each other, have fun and succeed”. Our school curriculum reflects these goals and is designed to support the development of our individual pupils intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually.
We aim to:-
- provide a learning environment which enables the children to become self-motivated, independent, confident learners who achieve to the best of their ability.
- provide learning opportunities which enhance the National Curriculum and to develop in the children a responsibility for themselves, their community and the environment.
- make your child’s time with us, challenging, happy and stimulating in order for them to achieve the highest standards possible across the curriculum.
Westbourne Primary School provides a safe, healthy and stimulating environment where children, parents and staff are partners in learning, ensuring enjoyment and pursuing excellence, to enable every child to reach their full potential.
Within school we work in a flexible, creative way that takes the interests and needs of individual children and adults into account to ensure the learning of knowledge, concepts and skills. We all learn together, how to care for the environment and become good citizens who are well prepared for the next stage in education and for life in a multi-cultural, globalised society.
Through our curriculum at Westbourne Primary School, we pass on enduring values, develop children’s integrity and autonomy and help them to be responsible and caring citizens, capable of contributing to the development of a just society and achieving future economic wellbeing.
At Westbourne Primary School we offer an active, broad and balanced curriculum which uses outdoor and indoor learning and promotes physical, intellectual, linguistic, emotional and social development of all our children and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Children in Reception class follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum 2014 working towards the Early Years Outcomes and children in years 1 to 6 follow the National Curriculum 2014 as directed by the Department of Education. As well as this, intertwined throughout all our learning is spiritual, social, moral and cultural development, including learning and practicing fundamental British Values. We value all the work we do as a credited ” Healthy School”, “ Eco Silver School” and “ Growth Mindset” school. This additional learning makes our school unique. Our children want our school to be:
- A really good one where we show we value each person by looking after each other.
- A place where we can build confidence to explore, dream and discover.
- A place where, if we work hard we, can do our very best.
Our Curriculum Offer
Maths
As part of our continuous school improvement we have made the decision to move away from our current math scheme, Abacus, to a new scheme called Power Maths, which will support teaching and learning of maths.

Phonics
Following an update from the DfE around phonics teaching we have moved to Essential Letters and Sounds, this is a phonics programme based on Letters and Sounds (2007). This new phonics programme will support your children in making quick progress to become fluent and confident readers.
To best support us in teaching your child how to read we ask that you read the decodable text provided by the school 4 times across the week. Spending 10 minutes a day reading with your child will hugely support them in their journey to becoming an independent reader.
We will be changing children’s books once a week on Fridays, this allows your child to re-read each text several times building their confidence and fluency. This is especially important as they begin to learn that the sounds within our language can be spelt in different ways.
It is a key part of learning to read that children re-read words and sentences that they can decode (sound out) until they are fluent (read with ease and precision). By reading texts several times children have the greatest opportunity to achieve this fluency.
The texts sent home are carefully matched to the teaching taking place in school. Your child will be practising what they have been taught in school with you at home. We will only ask children to read books independently when they can decode these by themselves. Any books that are not yet decodable for the children will be a sharing book. These books are there for you to read with you child, helping us to instil a love of reading from the very beginning of their reading journey. These could be read together with your child reading the words they are able to decode or could be read to your child.
If you have any further questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher via office@westbourneprimary.co.uk
